"Mali - In coordination with Mali’s National Directorate of Border Management, a directorate under the Ministry of Territorial Administration, IOM is this week facilitating a review workshop of the national borders policy in the region of Segou. It is part of a general review of Mali borders policy.
The workshop, which will run from September 29 to October 2nd, will be attended by some 85 participants, including representatives of the Mopti authorities, the National and Regional Directorates of Borders, and technical officers from the Ministries of Territorial Administration, Security, Defense, and Economy and Finance.
The aim of the regional workshop, the fourth of eight such meetings, will be to produce a new national borders policy that reflects Mali’s socio-economic, political, cultural and security context.
The workshops will allow the government to identify diversity and practical differences in specific border regions and the priorities in each region. They will also define the roles and responsibilities of regional actors in the implementation of the policy.
Mali’s current national borders policy was adopted in October 2000. These review workshops are part of the government’s efforts to consult with each of the country’s eight regions, before doing a review of the national borders policy at the central level.
IOM will support two of the workshops with funding from the Government of Japan.
